3-4 Years
We provide opportunities to develop learning in the seven areas of development.
- Personal, Social and Emotional
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Art and Design
Personal, Social and Emotional
We support the children to be confident in new social situations and outgoing with unfamiliar people, in the safe context of our setting. We teach them the importance of basic rules and why we have them, with an expectation that they will learn to apply these to our daily routine. We encourage the children to make healthy choices with food, drink and oral hygiene, along with developing independence with meeting their own care needs.
Communication and Language
We use books in the setting to widen their vocabulary, with children able to look at them freely. We incorporate regular story time and singing sessions, using a large repertoire of songs. We encourage them to use their voice, as well as actions to converse with their peers and staff, developing a wider range of vocabulary.
Physical Development
Activities including sandpits, bikes and trikes, climbing frames are available to continue to establish their gross motor skills. We also offer daily activities where the children can use one handed tools and equipment, eg making snips in paper with scissors, and by giving meaning to the marks they make.
Literacy
At this age we are encouraging the children to recognise their names in print form, each child has their own name card which is on their peg, and is also used by their key worker in daily activities.
Mathematics
We use activities which include pattern repetition, and use 2D and 3D shapes. We also incorporate small trips in the village, to enable the children to recognise shapes in our environment and to become familiar with words such as, in front and behind.
Understanding the World
People from our local community are invited to our setting to share their role, to enable the children to have a better sense of the world around them. This is backed up with the use of books and stories.
Expressive Art and Design
We offer opportunities for the children to actively be involved in making music using shakers, rattles and ribbons to express their feelings and ideas. In art the children will use various materials and techniques to explore colour and texture.
